Acne, contrary to popular belief, does not only affect teenagers. It can also appear later in life. The truth is that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to skincare for acne prone skin. Finding a skincare routine for acne can necessitate everything. From trial and error with a plethora of products to regular visits to the dermatologist and possibly even a complete lifestyle overhaul.

To find a skincare routine for acne that actually works, HealthShots spoke to Karan Bhaskar, a skincare expert and consultant, Clinique India.

Here’s a skincare routine for acne prone skin that can eventually get you clearer skin:

Handle acne with caution:

  1. The first step in combating pimples is to be as gentle as possible. No matter what you’re applying, don’t rub or massage it into your skin. This will only make the acne worse.
  2. Applying products to oily, sweaty, or tired skin is also a no-no.
  3. Keep your hands away from your face! Dirt or bacteria from your fingertips are the last thing your skin needs.
  4. Resist the urge to pick at those bothersome pimples, even if it appears to be the most difficult thing to do.
  5. Along with this, make sure to gently clean it. Contrary to popular belief, sloughing off layers of skin will not prevent acne. Using a harsh cleanser can remove the protective barrier, making it more prone to over-drying and irritation. Instead, make friends with a balancing cleanser.

Skin that is well hydrated is skin that is content

Avoid over-drying your skin to combat oil production. If the skin’s surface is too dry and dehydrated, your oil glands may secrete excessive amounts of sebum to compensate, which can aggravate acne. Using a lightweight gel moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated will keep it balanced.

Dirty scalp means more acne

You may not believe that your scalp has anything to do with facial acne, but it plays an important role. Bhaskar suggests keeping your scalp and skin clean at all times as dandruff flakes and dirt from the scalp can clog the pores on your forehead. Furthermore, using hair products containing preservatives or fragrances can aggravate breakouts, so they should be avoided.

Incorporate an acid into your skincare routine

Bhaskar recommends using an acid to clear up your skin. Salicylic acid, kojic acid, and glycolic acid are all excellent acne treatments. They all help to stimulate the growth of new skin cells by removing dead skin cells. An acid can also be used to treat inflammation. However, as with any powerful active ingredient, proceed with caution. To avoid dryness and irritation, start with a low concentration and work your way up.

Include these healing ingredients in skincare routine for acne

Incorporate ingredients like calamine, allantoin, chamomile, hibiscus, or Vitamin B3 on blemished skin. As all of these ingredients help the skin heal faster, calm and soothe any inflammation, and provide relief to irritated spots.
