DIY skincare masks to pamper your skin after Holi

Pink, red, green, yellow, blue, purple and orange… The colours of Holi look resplendent and add a festive fervour, no doubt! But whether you may have or have not followed a pre-Holi skincare routine, it’s worth it to give your skin TLC post the festival. And what’s better than some DIY skincare masks?

Chemical-laced colours can leave your skin irritated, resulting in acne, boils, rashes and other infections.

The traditional precautionary advice given to people partaking in the Holi shenanigans is to apply coconut/mustard or any sort of cold compressed oil, before entering the arena! This prevents the toxic chemicals from seeping through your skin.

While this is alright, sometimes this may still not work, and you may end up concurring allergies! For such times, Ruchita Acharya, founder of Glow and Green, suggests 3 easy-peasy colourful anti-inflammatory masks that you can make at home.

DIY skincare masks after your Holi celebrations

1. Turmeric and orange peel

Turmeric gets the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory value to the mix. It prevents hyperpigmentation, which ensures that healthy skin cells are restored. It also helps to clear the skin from acne due to its antibacterial properties. Furthermore, an added advantage is that it moisturises the skin as well. So when added with dried orange peel powder and multani mitti, the result is powerful. To make the paste, almond oil should be added, and there you have the most powerful anti-inflammatory mask. Keep this turmeric paste for 10 minutes and then rinse it off, followed by the toner, serum, and moisturizer routine afterwards.

2. Strawberry and clay

Strawberries are vastly used in skincare due to the abundance of vitamin C present in them. Strawberries contain alpha hydroxylic acid that helps to exfoliate the skin and remove dead cells. They also contain salicylic acid and ellagic acid which contribute to the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties. So, it helps with acne, slowing down collagen destruction and formation of wrinkles. They also nourish the skin after removing excess sebum which can attract bacteria. The ellagic acid present in strawberries helps in deflecting ultraviolet rays of the sun and protects the skin from sunburn and redness. Benotine clay is essentially aged volcanic ash, which is why it is mineral-rich. It also has the tendency to absorb negative toxins, which makes it useful to use, especially after Holi, given the in taking of chemicals.

Thus, an excellent mask is formulated when frozen strawberry pulp or dried strawberry powder is mixed with Benotine clay and water as per requirement. Bentonite clay is easily available to buy, and so are strawberries!

3. Tomato and rice flour

Tomatoes include chemical compounds such as lycopene, lutein, and vitamins E and C, all of which is play an integral part in skincare. These compounds help with sunburns, helps in brightening the skin, toning the skin, shrinking pores that prevent the bacteria from inhabiting your face and most importantly, helps in soothing and cooling skin with rashes.

* Extract tomato juice from the tomatoes.
* Add it to rice flour and water as needed.
* Use the paste and wait for ten minutes and then wash it off.

This makes an amazing and effective mask. Rice flour acts well as an exfoliator.
