Ghee, an eternal in the Indian kitchen, is known for its healing properties. This rich and healthy fat is smeared on a hot roti and even used as a cooking medium. The love for ghee is so much that even Bollywood’s fit divas like Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Alia Bhatt sing praises of it. However, do you know that there are umpteen benefits of ghee for hair?

Yes, you read that right! The benefits of ghee are not just limited to your internal well-being. This treasure food of Ayurveda is also considered a booster for your hair health.

If you’re still sceptical of our claim, Dr Nivedita Dadu, a renowned dermatologist, spoke to HealthShots and explained the virtues of ghee in beauty and haircare rituals too.

“Ghee is a form of clarified butter. The good cholesterol and the fatty acids in ghee act as healing agents for the body. It is also used to moisturize hair and skin during winters. It is very beneficial for your hair health.” says Dr Dadu, who is also the founder and chairman of Dr. Nivedita Dadu’s Dermatology Clinic.

Here are some expert-backed benefits of ghee for hair:

1. Moisturizes your tresses

Lack of moisture is one of the major causes of dull, dry and damaged hair. The healthy and rich fatty acids found in ghee nourish the scalp and hair follicles from within to give a boost of hydration, restoring the hair’s health.

2. Gives your hair a blinding shine

Applying ghee directly onto the hair and scalp can improve the texture endowing the hair with extra smoothness and shine. Ghee can help treat dullness and frizzy hair too.

3. Conditions your hair

Ghee can also be used as an overnight deep conditioning treatment for the hair. A massage with warmed ghee on the hair not only will condition but will also stimulate the blood circulation in the scalp.

4. Promote hair growth

Applying ghee to your hair can promote their growth too by making your hair thicker and longer. The essential nutrients in ghee can help grow your hair by an inch or two within a month.

5. May reverse hair damage

It is a rich source of healthy fats and some essential vitamins such as vitamin A and D, which helps to treat the dullness and roughness of hair strands. “It nourishes and moisturizes the damaged hair with just one or two uses,” says Dr Dadu.

6. Avoids split ends

Ghee is rich in nutrients like vitamins A, D, K2, E and antioxidants that makes it beneficial when it comes to nourishing split ends. Your hair ends split as a result of undernourishment. It not only calms the frizz down but also smoothens the tresses, adds extra shine and bounce to the locks.

So, ladies, it’s time to take the ghee beyond our kitchen and use it for hair care too.

For this, warm a spoonful of ghee and massage it into your scalp and hair like you normally do with hair oil. Wrap a hot towel around your head to let your hair soak up all the goodness of ghee. In the meanwhile, you can fry some makhanas in ghee as a quick ‘pick me up’ snack. After an hour, wash your hair with a mild shampoo and get ready to bedazzle the world!
